This started happening a few weeks ago and your suggestion doesn't work and all I can do is close the app window completely.
When I re-open if I'm lucky I can get it showing properly if I go to another puzzle but it may work only once or twice. Last week I had 3 partially completed puzzles because if I left them I couldn't get back in due to the ad issue.
This is becoming extremely annoying and when will it be fixed!
I also have trouble with the ad freezing the program but it happened when I tried to do the card flip. And yes it is really annoying.

Why when I play second puzzle on the calendar puzzles, does it cost 100 coins? I used to have to watch a video/ and! I'm losing coins faster then I can make them!!

I am unable to close the Ads to play various puzzle including the daily puzzle. When the Ads cannot be closed the game locks up and has to be closed and reopened. Very annoying since we cannot play the games we really enjoy.

I use to be able to adjust my screen size to get the "X" to appear. Now my screen does not change. I am assuming it is a setting in option that I have not found.
Your solution of CTRL + scroll mouse key did work. One caution I would include is to check the mouse battery. I normally do not use my mouse in favor of my touch pad.
